Description

Common Applications Scotchweld DP 8005 is used in include;

  • Structural bonding of polyolefins (polypropylene, polyethylene, TPO) without flame treatment, priming, or chemical etching
  • Bonding dissimilar substrates (e.g., plastic-to-metal, plastic-to-composite)
  • Replacement of screws, rivets, and plastic welding in assembly operations
  • Applications requiring water, humidity, and chemical resistance
  • Situations where a one-step, no-pretreatment process is desire

3M's LSE - Low Surface Energy Adhesive - DP8005 is an acrylic adhesive which is a two-part adhesive system. This provides excellent bond strength and durability.

Orange Mixing Nozzles must be used with this product with an EPX Plus II Applicator.

Often referred to as epoxy adhesives or epoxy glue, acrylic adhesives actually belong to a separate chemical family with their own unique characteristics.

FAQs

What Is DP8005?

A two-part, acrylic-based (methacrylate/amine) adhesive with a 10:1 mix ratio by volume. It is specifically formulated to structurally bond many low surface energy (LSE) plastics — including polypropylene, polyethylene, and TPOs — without special surface preparation.

What Substrates Can It Bond?

  • Polyolefins (polypropylene, polyethylene, TPO) — no special prep required
  • Dissimilar substrates (e.g., plastic to metal, plastic to composite)
  • Steel, aluminum, glass, rubber, and other plastics (with appropriate cleaning/abrasion)

Does It Require Surface Preparation?

For polyolefins and TPO, only an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipe is needed. For metals, abrasion and solvent wiping are recommended. All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of oils, dust, and mold release agents.

Key Working Properties (at 23 °C / 73 °F)

Mix Ratio (Volume, B:A) - 10:1

Worklife - 2.5 – 3 min

Time to Handling Strength - 2 – 3 hours

Time to Full Cure (Off White variant) - 8 – 24 hours

Clamping Pressure - 4 – 8 psi

Can Cure Be Accelerated?

Yes. Heating the bondline to 150–175 °F (66–80 °C) for 30 minutes will speed curing. Parts should dwell at room temperature for a minimum of 10 minutes before applying heat.

What Is the Recommended Bondline Thickness?

The product contains 0.008" glass beads for bondline thickness control. A bondline of 0.005" to 0.008" is recommended; thickness below 0.005" yields unpredictable results.

What Applicator Is Required?

The 3M™ EPX™ Plus II Applicator system with an orange 10:1 mixing nozzle is specified. Hand mixing is not recommended. Available in 45 ml and 490 ml cartridges, as well as bulk formats.

Storage and Shelf Life

Store at 4 °C (40 °F) or below in original, unopened packaging. Use within 18 months from date of manufacture.

Is It Suitable for Automotive EV/High-Voltage Applications?

This product is an industrial product and has not been designed or tested for automotive electric powertrain battery or high-voltage applications requiring IATF certification, PPAP, or Ppk ≥ 1.33.
