Description

High peel and shear strength for strong bonds in critical applications is what 3M Scotch-Weld Epoxy Adhesive DP460 exhibits. It provides excellent shear and peel strength along with good impact durability.

3M Scotch-Weld DP460 bonds to many surfaces including ceramics, metals, glass, wood and some plastics.

When it comes to preparation and application, 3M Scotch-Weld Epoxy Adhesive DP460 is straightforward and easy to use. Simply mix the components with a 2:1 by volume mix ratio using the EPX Plus II Applicator and associated green mixing nozzle, then apply according to the instructions to achieve a strong, long-lasting bond.

The components are easy to mix and the 60-minute work life allows users ample time to reposition bonding surfaces before achieving a durable, long-lasting bond.

FAQs

What is 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive DP460?

3M Scotch-Weld DP460 is a high-performance, two-part, toughened epoxy adhesive. Formulated with a 2:1 mix ratio by volume, it provides high overlap shear and peel strength along with high impact resistance and long-term durability.

---------------------------------------------------------------

What is the work life (open time) and handling strength time for DP460?

  • Work Life / Pot Life: Approximately 60 minutes at 73°F (23°C) for a 10-gram batch.
  • Handling Strength: Achieved in roughly 2 to 4 hours at room temperature.
  • Full Cure Time: 24 hours at 73°F (23°C).

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Can the cure time of DP460 be accelerated with heat?

Yes. Heat forcing reduces cure times significantly. Curing at elevated temperatures (such as 150°F to 200°F / 66°C to 93°C) can fully cure the bond line in 30–60 minutes depending on part mass and temperature transfer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

What color is DP460 after curing?

DP460 cures to an off-white color.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

What materials can DP460 bond?

DP460 is versatile and bonds effectively to:

  • Metals: Aluminum, stainless steel, steel, copper, and brass.
  • Composites: Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), fiberglass (GRP), and epoxy laminates.
  • Engineered Plastics: ABS, polycarbonate, rigid PVC, acrylic, and nylon (proper surface prep required).
  • Other Substrates: Ceramics, glass, wood, and concrete.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

What level of mechanical strength does DP460 offer?

  • Overlap Shear Strength: Typically exceeds 4,500 psi on etched aluminum at 23°C.
  • Peel Strength: High T-peel strength (approx. 50–60 piw on etched aluminum), indicating exceptional resistance to impact, vibration, and peeling forces.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

What is the temperature operating range for DP460?

DP460 performs across a wide temperature range, typically from -55°C to 121°C.

----------------------------------------------------------------

How should surfaces be prepared before applying DP460?

  1. Clean: Remove oil, grease, and contamination using solvent cleaning (e.g., isopropyl alcohol or acetone).
  2. Abrade: Lightly sand or grit-blast the surface to increase physical surface area and adhesion.
  3. Wipe Clean: Remove abraded dust with a clean, lint-free cloth soaked in solvent.
